Touring Southeastern Ohio for bed bugs

This past week has been a wild ride! The dogs and I have spent so much time in the beautiful hills of Southeastern Ohio. Hocking Hills, bed bugs. Vinton County, bed bugs. Ross County, bed bugs. The good news: the dogs don’t get tired of riding (unlike their chauffeur). The bad news: the beautiful leaves have been replaced by bare branches.

Columbus, Ohio – Got Bed Bugs? We Do!

Okay, we know that nobody actually wants to have bed bugs, at least most normal people, unless you are using them for research or training purposes (watch the video from the story on WBNS showing how we train Ollie). Well, that’s exactly why we keep live bedbugs, for training purposes. We use them to train Ollie the bed bud detection beagle to find bedbugs in Central Ohio homes, offices, hotels, schools, and even automobiles. By providing continued training to our bedbug dog and bedbug detection team members, we are able to provide our clients the best possible service by discovering bedbugs that would be virtually impossible to find without detecting the scent of the insects. In addition to the usual places that you may look for bedbugs like in the crease of mattresses, and under cushions in furniture, Ollie is able to guide us in locating bedbugs in much less conspicuous, and more difficult to inspect locations. More significantly is that Ollie’s keen scent detection ability allows us to locate the infestation point, rather than just one or several bedbugs that have not yet returned to the nest after feeding.

Ohio Bed Bug Detection Service for Preventing Bed Bug Infestations in Multi-Unit Buildings

Columbus and Central Ohio Bed Bug detection service for hotels, motels, office buildings, condos, and apartment buildingsWhether you are managing a Hotel, Motel, Apartment Building, Condominium Complex or office building, bed bug infestations should be an area of major concern. Failure to discover a bed bug infestation early in your multi-unit building can lead to substantial expenses both for management as well as the tenants. This is particularly significant due to the ability of bedbugs to spread from unit to unit, office to office, or room to room. Therefore, if one room, unit, or office becomes exposed or infested with bedbugs the rest of the building is more susceptible to becoming infested with those bed bugs simply due to the proximity.

Bed bugs can travel a range of approximately 100 feet to feed. Therefore, in addition to the parasitic insects infesting in or around beds or other furniture where they feed, they get behind outlets, cracks in walls and floor boards, in carpeting, under doors into hallways, and just about anywhere else you can imagine. Because bed bugs can travel on their own accord as well as on people and items which may be taken from one place to another, bed bug infestations in hotels, motels, apartments, offices, and other multi-unit buildings have a high tendency to spread quickly. This type of environment is also more susceptible to initial bed bug infestations due to the number of visitors that pass through any or all of the areas.

Adding to the significance of prevention and early discovery is the fact that even a minor infestation can rapidly grow, since each female bed bug can lay over 500 eggs per month. This adds the importance for multi-unit building managers to take proactive steps in bed bug detection. For both proactive bed bug inspections, and in reactive bedbug inspections in response to possible infestations of bed bugs, the most successful method to locate bed bug infestations is through use of a Canine Bed Bug Detection Team. The bed bug detection dog and its trainer can search a room within a matter of just a few minutes with a 97% rate of accuracy in determining if there is a bed bug infestation and locating it, while even a well-trained pest control specialist can take a couple of hours of searching with an accuracy rate of only about 30%.

In addition to handling as-needed bed bug detection services when a homeowner, renter, tenant, guest or someone else feels that there may be a bed bug problem, the canine bed bug inspection team at Buckeye Bed Bug Detection helps property owners and building managers by setting up regular bed bug inspections as part of the regular property maintenance. This proactive approach assures that the property is bed bug free, and allows us to catch any bed bug infestation before it spreads throughout the multi-unit building and causes substantial extermination expenses to be incurred.

NESDCA Certified Handler Teams!

Buckeye Bed Bug Detection is starting 2012 off with a bang!  Our two handler teams are both certified with the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (www.nesdca.com).  NESDCA was formed by pest control professionals to ensure the highest  standards for entomology scent detection canines are upheld and is a certifying organization assuring the highest quality standards in scent detection canines.  Certification is good for one year and the handler teams must pass the certification exam on an annual basis.  The test includes various distractors (such as dead bed bugs) to ensure the canine only alerts on live bed bugs and viable eggs.  This third party administered testing is further verification that canine bed bug detection really does work and is yet another weapon to be used in the ongoing battle with the spreading bedbug epidemic.

Mild Winter in Ohio and the Midwest may add to the Bed Bug Epidemic

With a mild winter in 2012, at least in Central Ohio and throughout much of the Midwest, you can expect that the bed bug epidemic will grow even faster. Since freezing is know to kill bedbugs, the typical winter season has a helpful impact on reducing bed bugs living outside of the home, office, hotel or other heated building.
Bed bugs that have found their way into a vehicle, garage, boat, or outdoor area are usually killed by freezing winter temperatures. In a mild winter, this may not happen. Since the parasitic insects are able to go several months without feeding on your blood, without extended periods of freezing temperatures to reduce the bedbug population, a mild winter could prove to add to the bed bug epidemic for 2012.

Bed Bugs Are In Our Schools!

This picture below is from a school somewhere in Central Ohio:

Preventing the spread of bed bugs in schools.

Yes, this school is having a problem with bed bugs being spread amongst the kids school bags and coats as they hang in the hallway.  This is not an isolated incident or problem.  It can happen at any school in any city.  All it takes is one student or teacher with bedbugs at home….some bugs there catch a ride to school, move to another bag or jacket and head back with the owner to their home.  This process can continue until the infestation is discovered and treated.  But who knows where the bugs have spread before that happens?

I do applaud the approach being taken by this school to combat the problem.  It’s economical and does an effective job of isolating each student’s items from roaming bedbugs.  As I’ve said before, these items are not being posted to deter you from interacting with the world.  They are meant to educate you to the different ways bed bugs are being spread and hopefully assist you in avoiding the spreading bed bug epidemic.
